A note from our winning Family – The Heinse Family!

Riaan (Dad) started with the Fitness shows at the age of 42 in 2005. The following year Riaan and Ruan, the eldest son – then 19, took part in Bernadette’s show (Mr. & Ms Fitness SA). The following year Riaan was the only one that took part although he tried to convince us to start as well. Our youngest son, Heinrich said that he can’t wait to be old enough. Heinrich started training with Riaan at age 16, so Fitness is in our blood!

At the end of 2007 we heard about the Body Beautiful competition with a family division. We were sitting in a coffee shop and Riaan said that he would like us to take part, but he needs us to commit. Ruan wasn’t that keen but Riaan said to him that if we win this competition he will regret that he wasn’t part of it and because we going to train together, he will feel left out. In the end, we as a family committed ourselves.

Riaan is a hairstylist and owner of a salon and I’m his receptionist. We are working very long hours, from Tuesdays to Saturdays and twice a week till 8 o’clock in the evening. Ruan is a 3rd year student in Graphic Design & Photography and Heinrich in grade 12.

Because Riaan is the most motivated and disciplined, he was the one driving us, our leader & motivator. The only time we could train together as a family was 5 o’clock in the morning. So, from Monday to Friday we trained from 5 to 6. We went to a Sport’s Nutritionist, Bernadette Beyer (organizer of Mr. & Ms Fitness) - for our eating/training programs and every two weeks for our assessments. The competition between the two boys, and don’t forget their father, was something else.

For me, who never seriously trained in a gym and didn’t even like to gym, it was very difficult! I’m not a morning person and many mornings I made some plans and excuses not to get up and gym and like always, once you’re there, you enjoy it. Riaan and the boys were very supportive and we had a lot of fun and many great laughs, not to mention all the friends we’ve made.

The winning eating & training program

Our eating program consists out of 7 meals a day, 3 big ones and 4 snacks. We believe in doing it the natural way.

A days meal consist of:
A protein shake after training.
Breakfast: eggs and rye bread
Snack: protein shake
Lunch: chicken/fillet steak & rice,
Snack: protein shake
Dinner: chicken/fillet steak/ostrich mince and rice/baked potato
Snack: peanut butter and biltong
Daily intake of flaxseed oil and Mom and Dad need to take metabolism boosters.

Training: WEIGHTS
Monday: chest and stomage
Tuesday: arms, tri/biceps, calves
Wednesday: back and stomage
Thursday: legs, squads, hamstrings, calves
Friday; shoulders and stomage
20 minute of cardio after each work out.

On stage we were very confidant, but myself and Heinrich were very nervous, this was our first time on stage. The magic of a family that stood together and had the same goal to win the competition was incredible. As a family we gained so much more than the prize money. We felt a closeness that was missing before and it is something to be very proud of.  This is something that we can share with our grandchildren some day and motivate them to look after themselves. There are so many reasons for people not to look after themselves but do they ever think, there are so many reasons why it is important. We believe it is only your attitude towards life that has to change.

God gave us our bodies and the power to look after them. Without God this wouldn’t be possible, he keeps us healthy and strong!
